Quiti-Kill Teams with QC to Fight Dengue
The Quezon City government entered into a partnership with the corporate private sector for a more sustainable and successful anti-dengue drive.
This was done through the signing of a REAP manifesto at the Bulwagang Amoranto, involving leaders of the city government led by Mayor Herbert M. Bautista. They were joined by representatives from biotechnology companies Entogenex Industries and Yngentech, Inc., led by His Royal Highness Tunku Naquiyuddin ibni Tuanku Ja’afar of Malaysia, the chief advocate of REAP. REAP stands for Reduction of mosquito population, Education of the disease and its transmission, Activation of the community and Protection from mosquito bites. REAP aims for a dengue-free Philippines.
The mayor expressed his gratitude to the Malaysian Prince for choosing Quezon City as the first city to roll out the programs under the REAP advocacy. The city is the most affected by dengue with a reported 1,862 cases within the four-month period of January to April 2012, resulting to 11 deaths, according to Dr. Rolly Cruz, city epidemiologist, who was also a signatory in the manifesto.
Yngentech, Inc. President, Mr. Eugenio S. Ynion, Jr., stated the private corporate sector, can help improve the reach and coverage of DOH and local government programs, share expertise in marketing and information dissemination and finally, offer their newest biotech discovery, Quiti-Kill. Quiti-Kill is a biolarvicide that controls the mosquito population by killing mosquito larvae but in a non-toxic, environmental friendly manner. It is also very easily applied. Quiti-Kill is placed in areas where there is potential breeding of mosquitoes such as stagnant water where the mosquito larvae live. Quiti-kill Rice Husk, in sachet, is very cost-effective and remains effective after 2 weeks for an area of 10sqm. This is poised to be the most effective and the safest mosquito-control product.
Other signatories of the manifesto included Dr. Neil Ranaweera of Entogenex industries, Councilor Ivy Lagman of District IV representing ABC president Captain Rannie Ludovica, and Captain Jose Arnel Quebal of Barangay Fairview. Captain Quebal received Quiti-Kill samples and dengue information materials distributed to the residents in the barangay.
